Meeting with a lawyer is the first step in handling legal matters. It’s important to be properly prepared and informed for your initial consultation. The critical part of this meeting is to give accurate information and to ask any questions you may have.
What to Expect
Other than the initial phone conversation, the first meeting is when you provide the facts of your case. The lawyer will then explain what your options are, and any general legal implications involved, and to discuss what your next steps should be.
What to Bring
Although you won’t have to get any records you don’t already have, you should bring what you do have with you to make the most of your time with your attorney.
It’s also a good idea to bring any documentation that supports your case. Depending upon the issue at hand, these documents could include:
- pictures
- bills
- letters or emails
- text messages
- and anything that’s relevant to the matter at hand
For example, if you were injured in a car crash, any hospital bills and police report you can obtain would be useful and should be examined by your attorney.
What to Ask
It’s natural to have questions. Don’t feel as though you shouldn’t inquire about your attorney’s experience, professional opinions about your case, and strategic suggestions. It’s also important to be open about anything you think may be harmful to your case, as it is best to address that up front, and to ask about issues you don’t understand. Don’t be afraid to ask about the process, time frames, or how certain things work, or if you have heard other things from family members or friends. Our lawyers are well versed in the law and are more than happy to answer your questions at any time throughout your case.
